Charles Fazzino at Muscular Dystrophy Association Summer Camp

August 26th, 2010

Serenity-of-Wildlife-MDMA-camp-LR

I went to one of my favorite events of the entire year earlier this week – MDA Summer Camp. Every summer, The Muscular Dystrophy Association hosts over 90 week-long camps around the country for children with Muscular Dystrophy and related diseases. It’s an incredibly magical experience. The kids have a fantastic time, experiencing some freedom, having fun, and building lifelong relationships. To some families affected by Muscular Dystrophy, summer camp is the vacation of a lifetime. I have been lucky enough to attend four such camps and each time, I’ve worked with some of the most talented kids I’ve ever seen to create some wonderful works of art. This year, I again partnered with the A&P and Food Emporium and attended camp on A&P Day when dozens of A&P employees volunteer their time and effort to meeting the kids and helping out.

Every year MDA Camp has a different theme…this year it was the television show SURVIVOR. So, my staff and I prepared a project to do with the kids that would have something to do with this theme. So, in just about 2 hours, and with the help of more than 40 disabled children, we put together an original artwork based on one of my limited edition releases titled SERENITY OF THE WILDLIFE.  The kids drew all of the elements that are 3-D on the matting of the artwork and they helped me glue up the artwork in the center. As always, MDA Camp was a rewarding experience for me and these kids just touched my heart. They all show such courage and are truly inspirations to all of us!

In the interest of continuing to promote and raise money for the MDA, I want to remind you about the recyclable grocery bags I designed. They are being sold at The Food Emporium throughout Manhattan to benefit the MDA. You can read my earlier blog about them for more information. Please make sure you pick one up. If you’re not located in the area, you can order them by mail by calling the Food Emporium Catering Department at 212-381-0885.

Fazzino Pop Art Recyclable Bag Unveiled at Food Emporium

June 4th, 2010

I spent a couple of days this week doing something incredibly rewarding. I, along with my friends at The Food Emporium unveiled the new recyclable grocery bag I designed for them. Not only is the bag recyclable, but they are being sold exclusively through The Food Emporium Stores in Manhattan to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. I’ve worked with MDA for more than ten years and through that association, I was lucky enough to meet Liz Lucadamo from A&P. Liz has been a huge supporter of MDA for many many years…and besides that, she’s an absolute dream to work with … and FUN too! J Last year, Liz introduced me to Mr. Hans Heer, the Senior Vice President of the Food Emporium and he proposed the idea for these bags to be sold to benefit MDA. So, this has all been in the works for many months and we were all excited to finally see the results of our efforts. I’ve been told the bags are “selling like hotcakes” and I was fortunate enough to be able to appear at two signings along with two of my MDA buddies, Oliver and Jason.  Jason is totally into teddy bears and Olivier is definitely a budding artist. A huge shout out to them both! I’ll be working with both of them this summer again at the MDA Summer Camp, where I’ll spend a day creating an original work of art with the kids. MDA Camp is one of my favorite days of the year!

In the meantime, we hope the bags sell out and we can raise lots of $$ for this incredibly worthy cause. Someday, we’ll find a cure for these terrible neuromuscular diseases, but in the meantime, we can all contribute to the effort and appreciate what MDA does for these incredible young patients and their families.

If you live in New York, make sure you visit your local Food Emporium to pick up a bag. If you’re outside the NYC area, you can order them by phone. Just give The Food Emporium Catering Office a call at 212.381.0885. The bags cost $7.99 plus the shipping charge.

Thank you for helping MDA find a cure!

Fazzino, Strawberry, and Franco at Citi Field, Home of the Mets

May 26th, 2010

I had an amazing time last night at the home of the Amazin’s! We did two signings and one live art project…and took in a great ballgame….all in one night. The legendary Darryl Strawberry joined me outside the team store for a poster signing. I brought him an original home plate I painted commemorating his career and he autographed it. Together, we donated it to The Mets Foundation and it’s currently being auctioned on Mets.com to benefit the Foundation. Take a look and bid generously.

It was the first time  I had met Darryl and he was such a pleasure to work with. I was impressed by how much the fans adore him. He was mobbed getting into the signing and out of the signing, but he was gracious and every bit the superstar you would expect him to be. It was an honor to sign with him.

After the store signing, i went up to the Delta Sky360 club and created a second home plate live in front of the crowd. John Franco, who helped me unveil the artwork at Citi Field last season, joined me up there. We hung out, chatted and signed some more autographs. He signed the home plate i was working on up there and that will also be auctioned off on MLB.com to benefit The Mets Foundation.

After the signings, my wife and i watched the Mets whip the Phillies! It was a fantastic game and a great ending to a great night. It was nice all of you who were at the stadium (a special hello to the Pin Man- loved your helmet) and for those of you who weren’t, make sure you check out the exhibit/sale of my Mets Art Collection in the Mets Hall of Fame & Museum the next time you get over to Citi Field.

More Arguments for Arts Education – Pop Art

May 4th, 2010

I was watching WCBS local news a few mornings ago and i caught the tail end of a story that i looked up online today. It was about a student art exhibition sponsored by the NYC Parks Department. You can read the story for yourself at www.wcbstv.com. Hundreds of students throughout the NY area worked for four months to paint pop art picnic tables for the city’s parks. What a FANTASTIC arts educational opportunity. The kids really ran with it…they used tables as canvases to express themselves in beautiful ways – they addressed the issues that face them in school and in life, and they gave us an insight into their thoughts and feelings. They learned the value of teamwork and how to manage a project.

I will continue to blog about the value of arts education which is increasingly at risk in this country. The arts are so important in reaching kids…in giving them an outlet to express themselves….in helping them learn about themselves and the world around them. Ok, i’ll get off my soap box now.

I AM still working on my educational studio and hope to have it up and running in the next two months, in time to start hosting some workshops for the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year…if not before. In the meantime, i have recently hosted several interactive arts projects with kids around the country at a few of my gallery shows in Houston (Off the Wall Gallery), Austin (The Russell Collection) and Jacksonville (R Roberts Gallery). The piece we completed in Houston was auctioned off to raise funds for the Children’s Fund. The rest of the pieces were donated to corporate collections at Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital, The University of North Florida, and the Dell Children’s Hospital.

Each time i work with the kids is a rewarding experience. It’s always so interesting to see what types of kids come to these events. It’s such a mixture. And there’s always that ONE kid whose eyes just light up. You can tell you’ve inspired him or her to think about art…to go home and play with it some more…to look at it…and consider it. I’m astonished by how bright and thoughtful and interested they all are…so focused…and proud of the finished artwork. I must admit, it makes me proud too.

Fazzino Pop Art in the Lonestar State

April 28th, 2010

Just returned from a whirlwind trip to Texas. Love it out there. My wife is from Galveston and so i’ve spent a lot of time there, but this was my first trip to Austin. Started in Austin for another joint pop art show with Michael Godard at the Russell Collection. What an incredibly beautiful gallery. The owner, Lisa Russell, is someone who i have only recently had a chance to get to know…she KNOWS what she is doing and is a wonderful gallery owner. Had a great time out there. On Friday, i did a one-hour live art project on KEYE TV’s “We Are Austin Live” show and on Saturday, morning, we did an interactive project with a big group of kids at the gallery. The final work will be installed at the Dell Children’s Hospital. The folks at the hospital were kind enough to give me a tour of their facilities on Friday. I hope that my artwork can take some of the patient’s minds of their ailments if even for only a few minutes. Dell is an amazing hospital.

I admittedly didn’t have good “restaurant luck” in Austin until Saturday night. On Friday, i wanted to find some good Texas barbecue. Unfortunately, someone sent me to Stubb’s which is famous for it’s music….but not necessarily for it’s barbecue. On Saturday, though, i found myself at Maria Maria…..GREAT for Mexican and entertainment in the heart of Austin. I highly recommend it.

On Sunday, after the afternoon session at Russell Gallery, i flew to Dallas to participate in the Dallas Cowboys Taste of the NFL event. I was invited by the Cowboys to do a poster signing and show some of my Cowboys artwork. I met several of the playesr (see Deon Anderson below) and signed with the famous Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. The hand-painted helmet i donated to their auction was actually purchased by Wade Phillips’s wife. I can’t tell you why she bought it though…it’s a secret! shhhh. :-)

I’m looking forward to going back to Dallas for the Super Bowl in early 2011 and to working with both the Cowboys and the Host Committee in the meantime. We have some exciting plans in the works for the NFL Experience and some other events, so stay tuned. Just started working on the artwork.  But you can see the piece i currently have on the new Dallas Cowboys stadium at http://www.fazzino.com/football-art-prints-charles-fazzino.htm

The Pop Art Legends Tour Continues…In Jacksonville

March 25th, 2010

Last weekend, i appeared for the second time at a series of events with pop artist Michael Godard. We took our joint tour on the road to R Roberts Gallery in Jacksonville, Florida. What a fantastic show! We had a great time and made some wonderful new friends. While I was there, i also participated in a couple of childrens’ events, creating 3-D pop art with groups of kids. One of the pieces we made is being installed at the Wolfson Children’s Hospital and the second will become part of the University of North Florida’s Permanent Library Collection. On Saturday morning, Jennifer Riedeburg (owner of RRoberts Gallery) and I presented the piece that we created to Julie Handley at the Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Julie gave us a wonderful tour of the facility and i was amazed at the care the children receive. It’s an amazing place.

I’ve posted a few videos from the trip on my website. You can see one of the children’s events videos and the television interview Michael and I did together on my website Media Room.

Next up: Japan…leaving today….

Enjoy!

Pop Art for Pets

March 7th, 2010

On Friday morning, i took part in the unveiling of the fifth annual Trails to Tails NYC animal adoption guide at City Hall in downtown Manhattan. Trails to Tails is published each year by a wonderful non-profit organization founded by Susan Brandt called Rational Animal. About 6 months ago, Susan and her staff asked me if i would consider creating the artwork for this years version of the map which is distributed throughout all of the boroughs of NYC. I was happy and proud to be involved with this very worthwhile project. And on Friday, we unveiled the results.

Susan assembled a wonderful group of advocates including State Senator Eric Adams, and NY Assemblymembers Joe Lentol, Brian Dendecker, Micah Kellner, and Linda Rosenthal. All were present to express their support of the efforts made by Rational Animal. During the press conference, we heard that NYC’s animal shelters have gone from euthanizing more than 70% of the animals committed to their care to now euthanizing just over 35% of the animals. The goal is for NYC to be a no-kill city by the year 2015….a wonderfully ambitious, but much needed goal.

I concur with everyone who spoke at the conference, in that our animals are members of our family. We take them in and they become part of us. We love them and they return that love….with all their hearts.  This map is a valuable resource, not only to shelters where you can adopt an animal, but to emergency vets, information about neutering your animals, and dog parks where you can take your pal to meet new friends. Senator Eric Adams said it best when he said that this map could be called Trails to Tails….OR…. Trails to Tales…because each adoption begins a new tale…a tale of hope, love, and lifelong friendship.

You can find out more about Rational Animal on their website and obtain a copy of the map in many locations throughout the city. Visit the site for more information.

Meanwhile, we’re giving away 10 copies of the map that i will personally dedicate and draw on. All you have to do to win one is place a comment about the love of your animals on this blog between now and noon on March 15th. We’ll pick 10 winners at random to win maps. Good Luck and hug your animals…today and everyday!

 CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR TEN WINNERS!
Teresa, Edra, Ira, Robyn, Patti, Hal, Art, Mark, Timmy, and Camille
You will all be notified by my office via email so that we can get your dedication requests and addresses for mailing!

Return to the New Rochelle Public Library

March 3rd, 2010

A few months ago, i blogged about the New Rochelle Arts Council of the Arts Juried Exhibition i was asked to judge titled “Utopioptix”. Last night, i met with the other two judges on the panel, Katrina Rhein and David Tobey, to evaluate the final collection. All of the artwork chosen for exhibition was hung in the Lumen Winter Gallery at the New Rochelle Public Library.

I can’t divulge the first and second prize winners from the competition, but i CAN urge you all to come and see the show. There is an opening reception this Saturday night, March 6th at 5:30pm. We’ll be announcing the winners that evening. Join me and my fellow jurors and all of the exhibitors and take in what has turned into a really fun, thought-provoking, and very interesting art exhibit based on “Visons of the Future.”

So, here’s the irony of all of this. My own very first one-man show was hosted by the Lumen Winter Gallery at the New Rochelle Public Library back in 1984! This entire experience has brought back some fun memories. Below, i have posted the invitation for the Utopioptix show coming up this weekend AND the invitation for the Charles Fazzino show from 1984-85. Boy how time flies!

Enjoy and I hope to see you on Saturday!

Pop Art Updates from Super Bowl XLIV

February 7th, 2010

It’s been a whirlwind this week down in Miami, where i’m making appearances for Super Bowl XLIV. I’ve done two cigar humidor signings, two national television interviews, a couple of local television interviews, two gallery shows, and i just finished a poster signing at the President’s Dinner at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino/Hotel - a fantastic event!

But the most important appearance i’ve made so far was yesterday, when i did the CBS Early Show with Indianapolis Colts Wide Receiver Pierre Garcon. Pierre, a Hatian-American, started a foundation – Helping Hands – to help those in need in his native country of Haiti. When the disastrous earthquake victimized the country last month, the work of Pierre’s foundation became that much more important. He and I have teamed up to raise money for the relief effort. We have both autographed  one of my hand-painted, 3-D Super Bowl XLIV helmets and it is currently being auctioned on ebay with 100% of the proceeds benefitting Helping Hands. Take a look and bid generously!

Thanks,

Charles
