Fazzino Pop Art Tour with Michael Godard Kicks Off in Houston

February 24th, 2010

Last weekend, i was at Off the Wall Gallery in Houston, Texas to kick off a new tour i’m doing. It’s a two man show titled “The Legends of Pop Art: The Next Generation” and pairs my artwork with that of painter Michael Godard. It was a great success and i have to tell you….Michael Godard is the nicest guy! What a great heart! His art and mine really work together fantastically in a gallery setting. We’re both fun…colorful…whimsical…and pop! Interestingly enough, despite Michael’s reference to us being “twins separated at birth” on one of our television interviews, i think it’s fairly obvious from the picture below that we come off on opposite ends of the spectrum. He has a tremendous wit and is quick on his feet. I guess you would describe me as a more “classic” sort…but we had a great time together and i am honored to be touring with him.

Make sure you catch our next appearance together at R Roberts Gallery in Jacksonville and in April, we’ll be at the Russell Collection Gallery in Austin, TX. You can get all the details on http://www.fazzino.com/appearances.htm. We’ll be showing the collaborative artwork we created together…you can see it below. It’s an original painting and a limited edition. And the galleries will be full of hundreds of our creations. Hope to see you there!

Rock On! :-)

Fazzino Collectors Mailbag – Hello from Cleveland!

July 28th, 2009

I received an email from my attorney…ok…so he’s not “technically” a collector…but he sure has my work on his walls! :-) He’s in Cleveland with his son and took a tour of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They came across the guitar i painted for “Guitarmania,” a public arts project sponsored by the Hall in Cleveland in 2003.

I remember getting the call from the Hall..they asked me to paint a seven-foot tall guitar. I said “huh?” thinking it was a joke…but within a week, i had this huge guitar sculpture in my studio. They said “paint whatever you want…” ….so i had some FUN and created what i called “Fazzinopalooza!” The guitar was shipped from my studio back to Cleveland where it was displayed, along with hundreds of others that were spread all over the city. In the end, the guitars were auctioned to raise funds for some very worthwhile charities – United Way and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame retained my guitar for permanent display and that’s where it sits.

Let me know if you ever see it there. I think from the looks of it, you’ll know how much fun i had painting it! Thanks for sharing the picture Josh!

Fazzino’s Pop Art Report from Pori

July 23rd, 2009

So, i’ve been waiting to blog about my trip to Pori until i have the picture i took with the President of Finland…but…well…nobody has emailed it to me yet…and there’s a funny story as to why i don’t have it on my own camera. More on that later….

My mom and I went to Pori, Finland last week to attend the Pori Jazz Festival where my work was being featured as the official festival artwork. I had my own gallery for three weeks right on “Jazz Street” and it was an incredible experience. First of all, i experienced the “midnight sun” for the first time. It’s awesome if you’ve never experienced it before. It was light out almost 24-hours a day! We still needed to put on sunblock at 10:30 at night! By midnight, the sun would soften a little bit but it never got completely dark. From what i understand, the Finns pay for it in the wintertime when there are only a few hours of daylight. It gets pitch black by 2:30 in the afternoon….probably one of the reasons for the high depression-rate there. But the summers are incredible.

The festival was hopping! Pori is a relatively small city and it’s size quadrouples during the time of the Jazz Festival. I actually did get out of the gallery to hear some of the music….I saw Booker T. Jones and heard (but didn’t see) Erykah Badu. Duffy was the featured performer and she flew in and out on her own private jet. But some of the best music was heard right on the streets under the tents that lined Jazz Street. They played 24/7 throughout the festival….a lot of techno music…really cool.

Literally thousands of people walked through our two-story gallery on Jazz Street. Mom, being a Finn, was so proud :-) For me, it was like in the early days of my career…most of the people had never seen my work before and they seemed to be really interested and taken with the colors and the style. I did a lot of explaining….how i do my work…how i got started…where you can see my work…all of it. It was a lot of fun.

But of course, the highlight was the visit to the gallery by Tarja Halonen, the President of Finland. I had been told a few days earlier that she was aware of my work and was coming to Pori for the festival and that she wanted to stop by the gallery. But nobody told us exactly when she would be arriving. Wouldn’t you know it….not 5 minutes after i returned to my hotel room one evening, i received a call that the President was on her way. I had to sprint from my hotel back to the gallery, sneak around the secret service, and race her limo down the street so that I was in the gallery before she arrived. Of COURSE, i forgot my camera back in the hotel room…hence…the need to wait for someone in Finland to email me the picture before i can show it to you. President Halonen was very gracious and spent more than a half hour with us, touring the entire gallery. It was an incredible honor for me…and for my mother!

All in all, it was a successful trip and a wonderful project to have been a part of. I felt like i had finally done something i’ve waited my whole life to do – make somewhat of a name for myself and my artwork in my mother’s homeland. So many people were exposed to the work and were excited to see it. It was an awesome experience! Of course, the photo of us with the President is yet to come! :-)

Watch Good Morning America on Thursday AM

June 29th, 2009

I’m going to be on Good Morning America on Thursday. It’s my first time on the show and it was so funny how it happened. To make a long story short, Sam Champion is doing a feature story on Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday. The producers asked me to come on both because I often create 3d pop art limited editions and original artwork based on both subjects…but even more because my grandparents came through Ellis Island and i have some good stories to share…plus i was an Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipient this year.

We had a great time filming last Thursday, but it was a long day…down at the Statue of Liberty at 8AM! I had the honor of meeting Sam…and of meeting Alex Harris and his wife Judy. Now, Alex is just an incredible human being. He personally came through Ellis Island in his early twenties after having served time in a Russian prison. His story is just unbelievable and i was honored to spend time with him.

I showed Sam some of my artwork and some photographs of my grandparents from way back when…but the story and item that everyone seemed most interested in was the lock my grandmother had when she came to this country. She was 13 years old and on her way here, by herself, from Sicily. It was 1903. She had NOTHING to her name but a ripped up sack with a few items of clothes that was taped to hold it together. Her brother was a locksmith in Sicily and had nothing to give her for her journey EXCEPT for a huge skeleton key lock.  He told her to use it to lock her door at night so she wouldn’t be attacked…and to use it to lock up her belongings during the day so she wouldn’t be robbed in the New World. That lock was handed down to my parents who then gave it to me. I have it framed in my living room with a tribute to grandma Josephine….They may show it on GMA on Thursday. I plan to hand it down to my daughter…along with all of the stories.

It’s easy to forget where we come from sometimes. But last Thursday, i was certainly reminded of the sacrifices that so many made just to get here…to live here…to be free here. It’s something pretty special. I wish you all a Happy Fourth of July holiday!

Baseball Pop Art an All-Star Hit in St. Louis

June 19th, 2009

All-Star Game Art Project at Busch Stadium, Pop Art Poster Signing with Jack Clark, and more!

Just returned to the studio today after a whirlwind tour through St. Louis to unveil my pop art for the upcoming MLB All-Star Game there. What a fantastic town!!!! I just love St. Louis.

On Tuesday, I spent five hours at Busch Stadium working with the fans to create a huge mural of the all-star game artwork. Some folks worked with me to cut and glue the 3-D unique while others painted their favorite St. Louis Cardinals moments onto the mat that will go around the work when it’s framed up. I do live art projects like this several times a year and how they come out totally depends on the people who work with me. The Cards fans were GREAT. They really got into it and the matting is going to look fantastic. The piece is going to be installed somewhere in the stadium so everyone who worked on it will be able to say they are part of a public art display at Busch Stadium. We had a lot of fun.

At one point during the live art project, I took a break to join former Cardinal all-star Ken Reitz on the field to unveil the all-star game artwork for the crowd. We unveiled the piece and then they asked me to throw out the first pitch…right over the home plate i had also painted for the evening. Now THAT was fun. I actually surprised myself and got it right over the plate! Both the plate and the artwork will be auctioned off at some point to benefit Cardinals Care, the team’s charitable foundation. Stay tuned to their website if you’re interested in bidding.

On Wednesday, I did an all-star game poster signing in the team store with the legendary Jack Clark. I’d never met Jack before … what a NICE guy…and it was obvious that the fans loved him. He played in several towns including St. Louis, Boston, San Diego, and New York. I asked him why he ended up settling in St. Louis…he said it was because the people there made him feel at home…so he stayed. I’m working on a hand-painted helmet to commemorate his career … hope to have it done for him in a few weeks.

I’m looking forward to returning to St. Louis in July for All-Star Game week. I’ll be there Thursday, July 9th through Saturday, July 11th. I’ll be doing a cigar signing at Jon’s Pipe Shop in Clayton on Thursday….will be at the All-Star Game Fanfest Friday during the day…hosting a show of my entire collection at Wentworth Gallery in Des Peres on Friday night…and spending all day Saturday at Fanfest. On Sunday, i have to go to Pori Finland for the Pori Jazz Festival. It will be the first year i’ll have to miss the game…it’s incredible how things always happen at the same time. Should be a tiring but FUN week! See you in St. Louis!

My upcoming week in St. Louis with the Cardinals!

June 15th, 2009

Fazzino 3D Pop Art Unveiling at Busch Stadium to Benefit Cardinals Care

This is going to be a very busy, but exciting week. I’m heading to St. Louis later today for a couple of days of events with the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium to launch my 3d pop art for the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and to benefit the team’s charity, Cardinals Care. The game is taking place on July 14 in St. Louis.

Tomorrow, i’ll be unveiling the all-star game artwork at home plate before the Cardinals’ game with the Detroit Tigers…but even more exciting…i’m going to be creating a huge original 3-D work with the fans before and during the game! They’ve set up an area in the stadium for me to work. So, if you happen to be in town and headed to the game, come over and give me a hand!

On Wednesday, i’ll be doing a pregame posters signing with Cardinals legend Jack Clark in the team store at the stadium. The Cards will host the Tigers again and i’m looking forward to relaxing and being able to catch a few innings of that game!

In July, i’ll be back in St. Louis to display my whole baseball art collection at the MLB All-Star Fanfest! I’ll also appear at the Wentworth Gallery in St. Louis on Friday night….I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there. Unfortunately, i’ll only be in town through Saturday, July 11th because on Sunday, the 12th, i need to go right from St. Louis to Pori Finland for the Pori Jazz Festival! Whew!

Alzheimer’s Association Forget-Me-Not Gala

June 4th, 2009

Monday night was the annual Alzheimber’s Association Forget-Me-Not Gala…i attended as a guest of the Foundation and they presented me with their “Creative Leadership” award…The artwork i created was auctioned to raise funds for the cause. I was incredibly honored to just be there…let alone to be recognized. I had the opportunity to meet David Hyde Pierce who so kindly introduced me. What an incredibly genuine, caring, and nice human being. I was thrilled to be able to spend some time with David. I commend him for the years of work he has put in on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Retired Yankees All-Star David Cone was also there to accept the Association’s “Community Leadership” Award….another great guy who gives so much of his time…and cares so much about people in need.

I gave a speech….i don’t speak for a living…i paint….but I did this in honor of my father and of my grandmother. I thought i would share that speech with you below. If you or a loved one is suffering from this terrible disease know that my thoughts are with you…and that the Alzheimer’s Association is there for you!

–Charles

“I would like to thank Lou-Ellen and Susan and everyone at the Alzheimer’s Association for this wonderful evening. I have been involved in fundraising for many years…raising millions of dollars, so they tell me…through my artwork for many worthwhile causes. The fight against Alzheimer’s is especially meaningful for me.

When I was in High School, my house resembled a prison with bars on the windows and blockades by the doors to keep grandma Josephine from wandering. She had Alzheimer’s and she was constantly looking for her mother. The hours of 3:30 – 6:00 each afternoon were assigned to my sister and me to keep watch. Our house was around the corner from the high school and as often as she could, grandma would throw open a window and yell to the kids heading home to save her and that we were holding her hostage.

The police knew her by her first name. They rescued Josephine several times. One time, she escaped the house and hitched to a nearby town with nothing but a sheet wrapped around her, her doll, and her pocketbook. This was the 1970’s and there were no drugs to keep her calm. She lived with the disease for 15 long years and passed away in a nursing home at the age of 91.

Years later, when my dad turned 80, strange things began to happen. After he and my mother returned from a trip to his native Italy, mom told me he had trouble translating Italian. We all just thought it was because he’d been so removed from it. Then one day, I offered to take him to his favorite restaurant. He gave me this innocent look and said “I don’t know that place.” I actually got angry….insistent…asked him what was wrong with him. I was horrified and knew immediately that it was Alzheimer’s again.

This time I thought it would be different. I heard about new drugs – arracept, nemenda…combined with zoloft. It was still horrible…even more for my mom who took care of him. But at least he had a somewhat better quality of life than his mother did. But he still slipped away before our eyes.

I created the artwork for this event to depict just a walk in the park….the tree of life stands above…the stages we all go through…how life starts and how it ends. And all the things that should be important to us as we go through that life. It should be….a walk in the park. It is my hope that with new medicine and scientific breakthroughs, someday dealing with Alzheimer’s will be just a walk in the park, marred by temporary and relatively minor impairment….and maybe we’ll even be able to take a peaceful walk in that park someday and remember Alzheimer’s as a disease of generations past. Thank you.”

Batman contemporary art is a hit….and the glitter too!

June 1st, 2009

I made my first appearance for Choice Collectibles over the weekend. They have exclusively commissioned me to do a limited edition celebrating the 70th anniversary of Batman. The piece was a little bit of a challenge. It took me awhile to meld the dark ominous feeling of Gotham with my standard color palette. I’m very happy with the way the piece came out and it was very well-received at the show.

I find that when i do shows in places for the first time, i am asked a lot of questions by collectors that i haven’t fielded in awhile. This weekend, the big question, was where i got the idea to use the glitter in all my pieces. Well, i’ll share a little secret with you. It was a mistake! Many years ago, i bought some glue and glitter to cover up a cutting mistake i made in one of my pieces…i used the glue to cover the crack and then added some colored glitter to it to hide the glue. People LOVED it…so, that’s how my use of glitter was born…i found the glitter i used now which is actually glitter already suspended in acrylic paint and i started using it to embellish all of my images. It’s worked out great and contributes to the “glitz” of my artwork. Sometimes making mistakes is a good thing!

Fazzino Paints the Alzheimer’s Association Forget-Me-Not Gala

May 28th, 2009

David Hyde Pierce Will Host This Year’s Alzheimer’s Association Gala at the Pierre Hotel in New York

I’ll be at the annual Alzheimer’s Association, NYC Chapter’s “Forget-Me-Not” gala on Monday, June 1 at the Pierre Hotel. I have created an official artwork for the event that will be auctioned to raise funds for Alzheimer’s care and research. I’ve blogged about this insidious disease before and how it affects so many millions of people in this country and abroad. I’ve been personally touched, as both my father and grandmother succumed to the disease. Alzheimer’s Disease can be classified as an epidemic…and there IS no cure. Every 70 seconds someone in the US develops the disease…so i urge you to join me…in whatever way you can…monetarily (donate $$)…or physically (help someone who has the disease or someone supporting someone who does)….to support those who live with this nightmare day in and day out…and to help work towards effective treatments and cures.

I created the official artwork for the gala ….A Walk in the Park….to symbolize the cycle of life. The Tree of life at its core sympbolizes how life starts and ends ….and all the phases in between. It’s my hope that someday, this disease will simply be a walk in the park, marked only by temporary and/or minimal impairment for the victims AND their loved ones.

Thank you!
