Fazzino Baseball Art at the Norman Rockwell Museum

July 5th, 2010

On Saturday, I had the great pleasure…and honor…of participating in the annual Baseball Day at The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA. What an incredible day!
The Fourth of July is all about America…our heritage, our history…and of course, our independence. I can’t think of a better place to celebrate than in the home of one of the greatest artists our country has ever produced. Norman Rockwell was more than an artist…he was a historian. I had the opportunity to tour the museum before our event began. I knew a lot about Mr. Rockwell, but i have never seen so many of his original works assembled in one place. The impact was incredible. Norman Rockwell never shied away from controversy. He painted what he believed. In particular, i saw for the first time, the original of The Golden Rule - an incredibly powerful piece, for which i understand, he received a great deal of hate mail.  The artist’s original Stockbridge studio is also on the Museum grounds.  I urge you…if you ever find yourself in Stockbridge, MA…make sure you get to The Norman Rockwell Museum. It’s a wonderful look at our country’s history through the middle of the twentieth century as seen through the eyes of a brilliant artist.

Now…back to Baseball Day. Of course, Norman Rockwell’s baseball paintings are some of his best known works….you can see them at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Baseball Day is the brainchild of curator Tom Daly whom i met almost a year ago. Tom saw some similarities between my work and career and that of Mr. Rockwell…while i was honored to even be compared…i was able to see what he was talking about…i hope that my legacy, similar to that of Norman Rockwells, is as a pop culture historian, of sorts.

Tom invited me up to Baseball Day and I was more than happy to oblige. There were baseball players, and representatives from the Hall of Fame, and baseball artist Graig Kreindler  More than 1,000 people came through the Museum on Saturday. I had the opportunity to meet Linda Ruth Tosetti (Babe Ruth’s grandaughter) who was on hand to talk about her heritage and her legendary grandfather. I worked with a wonderful group of kids…and adults…to create a work that will become part of the Museum’s permanent collection. I understand that it will be on view with the new acquisitions collection in the Fall and i’m VERY proud of that.

It was a fantastic weekend and we had lots of fun and met some great new friends.

Happy Fourth of July to All of You!

–Charles

Fazzino, Strawberry, and Franco at Citi Field, Home of the Mets

May 26th, 2010

I had an amazing time last night at the home of the Amazin’s! We did two signings and one live art project…and took in a great ballgame….all in one night. The legendary Darryl Strawberry joined me outside the team store for a poster signing. I brought him an original home plate I painted commemorating his career and he autographed it. Together, we donated it to The Mets Foundation and it’s currently being auctioned on Mets.com to benefit the Foundation. Take a look and bid generously.

It was the first time  I had met Darryl and he was such a pleasure to work with. I was impressed by how much the fans adore him. He was mobbed getting into the signing and out of the signing, but he was gracious and every bit the superstar you would expect him to be. It was an honor to sign with him.

After the store signing, i went up to the Delta Sky360 club and created a second home plate live in front of the crowd. John Franco, who helped me unveil the artwork at Citi Field last season, joined me up there. We hung out, chatted and signed some more autographs. He signed the home plate i was working on up there and that will also be auctioned off on MLB.com to benefit The Mets Foundation.

After the signings, my wife and i watched the Mets whip the Phillies! It was a fantastic game and a great ending to a great night. It was nice all of you who were at the stadium (a special hello to the Pin Man- loved your helmet) and for those of you who weren’t, make sure you check out the exhibit/sale of my Mets Art Collection in the Mets Hall of Fame & Museum the next time you get over to Citi Field.

Fazzino Pop Art in the Lonestar State

April 28th, 2010

Just returned from a whirlwind trip to Texas. Love it out there. My wife is from Galveston and so i’ve spent a lot of time there, but this was my first trip to Austin. Started in Austin for another joint pop art show with Michael Godard at the Russell Collection. What an incredibly beautiful gallery. The owner, Lisa Russell, is someone who i have only recently had a chance to get to know…she KNOWS what she is doing and is a wonderful gallery owner. Had a great time out there. On Friday, i did a one-hour live art project on KEYE TV’s “We Are Austin Live” show and on Saturday, morning, we did an interactive project with a big group of kids at the gallery. The final work will be installed at the Dell Children’s Hospital. The folks at the hospital were kind enough to give me a tour of their facilities on Friday. I hope that my artwork can take some of the patient’s minds of their ailments if even for only a few minutes. Dell is an amazing hospital.

I admittedly didn’t have good “restaurant luck” in Austin until Saturday night. On Friday, i wanted to find some good Texas barbecue. Unfortunately, someone sent me to Stubb’s which is famous for it’s music….but not necessarily for it’s barbecue. On Saturday, though, i found myself at Maria Maria…..GREAT for Mexican and entertainment in the heart of Austin. I highly recommend it.

On Sunday, after the afternoon session at Russell Gallery, i flew to Dallas to participate in the Dallas Cowboys Taste of the NFL event. I was invited by the Cowboys to do a poster signing and show some of my Cowboys artwork. I met several of the playesr (see Deon Anderson below) and signed with the famous Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. The hand-painted helmet i donated to their auction was actually purchased by Wade Phillips’s wife. I can’t tell you why she bought it though…it’s a secret! shhhh. :-)

I’m looking forward to going back to Dallas for the Super Bowl in early 2011 and to working with both the Cowboys and the Host Committee in the meantime. We have some exciting plans in the works for the NFL Experience and some other events, so stay tuned. Just started working on the artwork.  But you can see the piece i currently have on the new Dallas Cowboys stadium at http://www.fazzino.com/football-art-prints-charles-fazzino.htm

Opening Day at CitiField…Baseball Pop Art & the New Museum

April 5th, 2010

fazzino-baseball-pop-art-citi-field-Mets-LG

It’s opening day at CitiField and the Mets are taking on the Marlins…well…right now!

I have been over to the stadium a couple of times before the beginning of the season because i’m honored that the Mets have included my artwork in their new NY Mets Hall of Fame and Museum. The team has built a gorgeous new museum attached to what was (and still is) the main team store last year. They have devoted an entire glass case in the museum to my artwork and i’m looking forward to painting more baseballs and sculptures to continue filling it up. The picture below is “in progress” while they were still building the new attraction. The baseball pop art above is the image i created for the grand opening of the stadium last year and it’s also part of the exhibit. YOu can see it larger, along with the rest of my baseball collection on the basebal pop art page on my website.

I hope you have the chance to get down there to see it. It’s quite something and i’m very proud of it…and my association with the Metss.

M…E…T…S….Mets, Mets, Mets!

Olympic Pin Signing at the NBC Experience Store

February 17th, 2010

Today we continued a tradition. I’ve created seven sets of Olympic pins exclusive to NBC and each time, i’ve done a signing at the NBC Experience Store. Today was the signing for the Vancouver pin collection. This might be my favorite set yet and it was great to see all of my friends….and “pin collectors” there :-) .

If you’re interested, these four-layer collectibles can be found on the NBC/Universal Website at http://www.nbcuniversalstore.com/detail.php?p=255586&v=olympics_collectible-pins.  It’s amazing how over the years, i’ve seen these pins all over the world. I’ve walked into gallery signings in Europe only to find collectors waiting for me to sign a bag of Olympic pins. It’s become quite the collectible and i love watchign the phenomenon grow. I’m proud of the pins and the way that Aminco International has been able to translate my 3D style into such an impressive product.
