TRAVEL WITH FAZZINO: NEW YORK CITY

Pack your bags, it’s time to hit up the BigApple! New York City is smack dab in the middle of the “It’s a Small World Mural” and that’s with good reason. Fazzino is most famous for painting the City that Never Sleeps. From Lower East Side in the 1970’s to the evolution of Broadway, and even the horror of 9-11, Fazzino has documented it all. When considered all together, his collection represents one of the most complete visual histories of New York City in the late 20th and early 21st centuries in existence.  Some of his earliest works are of the lower east side of New York City. As a student at the New York School of Visual Arts, Fazzino spent a lot of time down there…particularly eating at all the wonderful delis.

Here is a limited edition from 1994, entitled: “From Fishes to Knishes.”

A Walk Down Broadway with Charles Fazzino

Fazzino’s Broadway collection is a subset of his New York City body of work, but it stands alone in terms of its fan base and historical significance. You can journey through the history of Broadway since the 1970’s with Charles Fazzino. First it was “Steppin’ Out on Broadway (1993):

Then it was”Broadway and Beyond”:

Today, it’s “Bright Lights, Big City, Broadway“:

Remembering 9/11

Then came 9-11 and Charles was so saddened by the tragedy that he locked himself in his studio and painted this. His work is usually whimsical and fun and full of joy. He told us that he couldn’t paint anything joyful anymore until he got this out of his system. After painting this, he never put the twin towers in another limited edition until the release of Hot Town Summer in the City, the collaborative work with the Tats Cru that reflects on 1970’s NYC.

The Big Apple

Because NYC is also known around the world as The Big Apple, Fazzino has often turned to the apple as a visual icon in his work. In fact, apples, hearts, butterflies, and hot air balloons are the icons that are often the most identifiable in his works. “In the Center of the Apple” and “Broadway’s Big Apple Night” are two currently available images that feature the Apple shape.

New York City Inspires Fazzino’s Pop Art Again and Again

Thirty years into his painting career, Charles Fazzino still returns to his favorite theme – New York City – over and over again. “It never gets old,” says Fazzino. “New York City is magical. It’s full of life and energy and is always morphing and changing. It’s an artist’s dream subject.”
