I just returned from my annual January jaunt to Japan. I go there every January to do shows and signings for my Japanese Agent, High Spirits & Yu. I find it interesting because being from New York, the big cities in Japan are the only place in the world i can travel to and actually be overhelmed by the congestion and architechture and sheer magnitude. Nagoya is incredible…with these tall skyscrapers and all the people!
I did three shows in three days….two at the Mitsugoshi Department Store in Nagoya and one at the Takashimaya in Tokyo. Most of the high end art shows happen in department stores in Japan – very high end places with an incredible clientele. They had to give out numbers to people so they didn’t have to wait on line for hours to get my signature. They were able to go shopping while they waited for their numbers to be called.
The highlight of my trip had to be meeting this one fan in Tokyo. His name was Shu-To. He spoke English and told me that he was also an artist and that he had created a present for me. From behind his back, he whipped out the coolest looking airbrushed T-shirt! I was impressed. Really neat! He and his buddies own an airbrush shop and you can see more of their work at www.clowns-entertainment.com.
I never return from my trips to Japan without an interesting story to tell. It’s always an adventure. I’m looking forward to my next trip in March.
Enjoy!

Hello from London! Arrived here on Sunday and leaving in the AM for Paris. I’m here for a showing of my 3d pop art at Art London and while here, I took the opportunity to go to the Pop Art Life exhibit at the Tate Modern. The exhibit has been causing a stir all over the world and now I know why.
First off, Art London was a great experience. I loved it! It reminded me of what Art Expo New York was like ten years ago. Very slick….a lot of wonderful artwork…not a lot of “art” that you had to stand around, think about, and pretend to like….like the telephone/office exhibit I blogged about last week. Peter Blake’s Art Bus stood outside to welcome everyone and the mix of art was thoughtful, fun, and even a little bit daring…but not too avant-garde to be appreciated. I actually met quite a few people who were familiar with my work but even more fun was to watch all of the people who had never seen it before. I went out on a bit of a limb, concentrating more on my original paintings and 3d pop art dioramas than on the limited edition artwork that most people are used to. I heard a lot of “oohs” and “aahhhs” and I was pretty excited about the response. I’m trying to get these “special” pieces out there and Art London was really the first opportunity I’ve had to do so. It was encouraging and certainly motivated me to create even more!
After Art London, it was off to the Tate Modern. Wow! So, even before I went, I read another review of the show…this one from the Wall Street Journal. What a contradiction! The article is a total condemnation of “shock artists” like Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons who, under the guise of “artists,” sensationalize and exploit, catering to the lowest common denominator and playing on people’s tendencies to be attracted to extremes. The reason their artwork gets so much attention is the same reason we all slow down when we pass a car wreck. We shake our heads but can’t help staring and gawking anyway. But it’s the controversial character of the work that makes it viable for a TATE MODERN EXHIBITION! Sometimes, I just don’t get it.
I was happy to see that the same writer did, although briefly, mentioned a different “strain” of pop art – the mainstream, as far as I’m concerned…the strain I aspire to be a part of….Lichtenstein, Oldenburg, Grooms, Haring, etc. This is MY pop art world. This is where I want to fit into art history.
So, I went to the Tate and even I was shocked! Many of the “works,” if that’s what you call them were more graphic than anything you’d ever see in a peep parlor or adult bookstore. The tension among the viewers was incredible. You could feel the level of embarrassment. The three old ladies in front of me almost choked on their dentures. Now I’m no prude…but really…is this REALLY what museums have to show these days? I guess it’s all about selling tickets. Maybe I should go out and stage a car wreck…blood and guts and all…and then sell tickets to anyone who wants to drive past. I’m still shaking my head.
Well…on to Paris!

Kevin, an old friend and pinball machine manufacturer, contacted me on facebook earlier this month. In the early 1990’s i was asked to paint a pinball machine for the PAPA 3 International Pinball Championships. Now THAT was a challenge. I almost didn’t even remember doing it until i received the message from Kevin. After the event, my pinball machine, titled “I’ll Play Manhattan” was auctioned off to benefit the NY Special Olympics. I don’t even remember where it ended up. It was great fun to see the pictures after all these years! You can see more of what Kevin does by visiting his website at http://www.classicpinball.com.
Thanks Kevin!

So, i’ve been waiting to blog about my trip to Pori until i have the picture i took with the President of Finland…but…well…nobody has emailed it to me yet…and there’s a funny story as to why i don’t have it on my own camera. More on that later….
My mom and I went to Pori, Finland last week to attend the Pori Jazz Festival where my work was being featured as the official festival artwork. I had my own gallery for three weeks right on “Jazz Street” and it was an incredible experience. First of all, i experienced the “midnight sun” for the first time. It’s awesome if you’ve never experienced it before. It was light out almost 24-hours a day! We still needed to put on sunblock at 10:30 at night! By midnight, the sun would soften a little bit but it never got completely dark. From what i understand, the Finns pay for it in the wintertime when there are only a few hours of daylight. It gets pitch black by 2:30 in the afternoon….probably one of the reasons for the high depression-rate there. But the summers are incredible.
The festival was hopping! Pori is a relatively small city and it’s size quadrouples during the time of the Jazz Festival. I actually did get out of the gallery to hear some of the music….I saw Booker T. Jones and heard (but didn’t see) Erykah Badu. Duffy was the featured performer and she flew in and out on her own private jet. But some of the best music was heard right on the streets under the tents that lined Jazz Street. They played 24/7 throughout the festival….a lot of techno music…really cool.
Literally thousands of people walked through our two-story gallery on Jazz Street. Mom, being a Finn, was so proud
For me, it was like in the early days of my career…most of the people had never seen my work before and they seemed to be really interested and taken with the colors and the style. I did a lot of explaining….how i do my work…how i got started…where you can see my work…all of it. It was a lot of fun.
But of course, the highlight was the visit to the gallery by Tarja Halonen, the President of Finland. I had been told a few days earlier that she was aware of my work and was coming to Pori for the festival and that she wanted to stop by the gallery. But nobody told us exactly when she would be arriving. Wouldn’t you know it….not 5 minutes after i returned to my hotel room one evening, i received a call that the President was on her way. I had to sprint from my hotel back to the gallery, sneak around the secret service, and race her limo down the street so that I was in the gallery before she arrived. Of COURSE, i forgot my camera back in the hotel room…hence…the need to wait for someone in Finland to email me the picture before i can show it to you. President Halonen was very gracious and spent more than a half hour with us, touring the entire gallery. It was an incredible honor for me…and for my mother!
All in all, it was a successful trip and a wonderful project to have been a part of. I felt like i had finally done something i’ve waited my whole life to do – make somewhat of a name for myself and my artwork in my mother’s homeland. So many people were exposed to the work and were excited to see it. It was an awesome experience! Of course, the photo of us with the President is yet to come!

Monday night was the annual Alzheimber’s Association Forget-Me-Not Gala…i attended as a guest of the Foundation and they presented me with their “Creative Leadership” award…The artwork i created was auctioned to raise funds for the cause. I was incredibly honored to just be there…let alone to be recognized. I had the opportunity to meet David Hyde Pierce who so kindly introduced me. What an incredibly genuine, caring, and nice human being. I was thrilled to be able to spend some time with David. I commend him for the years of work he has put in on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Retired Yankees All-Star David Cone was also there to accept the Association’s “Community Leadership” Award….another great guy who gives so much of his time…and cares so much about people in need.
I gave a speech….i don’t speak for a living…i paint….but I did this in honor of my father and of my grandmother. I thought i would share that speech with you below. If you or a loved one is suffering from this terrible disease know that my thoughts are with you…and that the Alzheimer’s Association is there for you!
–Charles

“I would like to thank Lou-Ellen and Susan and everyone at the Alzheimer’s Association for this wonderful evening. I have been involved in fundraising for many years…raising millions of dollars, so they tell me…through my artwork for many worthwhile causes. The fight against Alzheimer’s is especially meaningful for me.
When I was in High School, my house resembled a prison with bars on the windows and blockades by the doors to keep grandma Josephine from wandering. She had Alzheimer’s and she was constantly looking for her mother. The hours of 3:30 – 6:00 each afternoon were assigned to my sister and me to keep watch. Our house was around the corner from the high school and as often as she could, grandma would throw open a window and yell to the kids heading home to save her and that we were holding her hostage.
The police knew her by her first name. They rescued Josephine several times. One time, she escaped the house and hitched to a nearby town with nothing but a sheet wrapped around her, her doll, and her pocketbook. This was the 1970’s and there were no drugs to keep her calm. She lived with the disease for 15 long years and passed away in a nursing home at the age of 91.
Years later, when my dad turned 80, strange things began to happen. After he and my mother returned from a trip to his native Italy, mom told me he had trouble translating Italian. We all just thought it was because he’d been so removed from it. Then one day, I offered to take him to his favorite restaurant. He gave me this innocent look and said “I don’t know that place.” I actually got angry….insistent…asked him what was wrong with him. I was horrified and knew immediately that it was Alzheimer’s again.
This time I thought it would be different. I heard about new drugs – arracept, nemenda…combined with zoloft. It was still horrible…even more for my mom who took care of him. But at least he had a somewhat better quality of life than his mother did. But he still slipped away before our eyes.
I created the artwork for this event to depict just a walk in the park….the tree of life stands above…the stages we all go through…how life starts and how it ends. And all the things that should be important to us as we go through that life. It should be….a walk in the park. It is my hope that with new medicine and scientific breakthroughs, someday dealing with Alzheimer’s will be just a walk in the park, marred by temporary and relatively minor impairment….and maybe we’ll even be able to take a peaceful walk in that park someday and remember Alzheimer’s as a disease of generations past. Thank you.”

I made my first appearance for Choice Collectibles over the weekend. They have exclusively commissioned me to do a limited edition celebrating the 70th anniversary of Batman. The piece was a little bit of a challenge. It took me awhile to meld the dark ominous feeling of Gotham with my standard color palette. I’m very happy with the way the piece came out and it was very well-received at the show.
I find that when i do shows in places for the first time, i am asked a lot of questions by collectors that i haven’t fielded in awhile. This weekend, the big question, was where i got the idea to use the glitter in all my pieces. Well, i’ll share a little secret with you. It was a mistake! Many years ago, i bought some glue and glitter to cover up a cutting mistake i made in one of my pieces…i used the glue to cover the crack and then added some colored glitter to it to hide the glue. People LOVED it…so, that’s how my use of glitter was born…i found the glitter i used now which is actually glitter already suspended in acrylic paint and i started using it to embellish all of my images. It’s worked out great and contributes to the “glitz” of my artwork. Sometimes making mistakes is a good thing!

My 3D Pop Art Celebrates Ellis Island
I wondered how NECO could surpass the wonderful party they threw on Friday night….I met many of the past medalists on Friday and they told me to expect an incredible day on Saturday….but it’s just something that you can’t describe. What an incredible experience…what an incredible honor. I gathered with all of the other medalists at the Ritz Carlton Hotel Battery Park. They assembled us and we followed a bagpipe escort to one of the Ellis Island Ferries. We arrived at Ellis Island to a complete color guard and military line down the red carpet. We were escorted into the main tent and were seated on stage for the ceremony. There was a full military procession, some incredible entertainment…i think the Georgia Mass Choir was my favorite….the Air Force Liberty Band was incredible too…as were the American Belles and the 82nd Airborne. They were just ALL incredible.
We were individually presented with our medals. Emilio Estefan gave a fantastic speech. After the ceremony, we were taken to the Great Hall for a black tie dinner. My words just can’t give adequate meaning to this event. To hear so many stories of the brave and courageous who all came through Ellis Island…to be honored in the place where my family entered this country…to remember the feeling of hope and the dreams they carried with them…and to pay tribute to the opportunities offered by The United States of America…it was very powerful. I am grateful to NECO for adding me to this incredibly prestigious list of people. It was a night i will certainly never forget!

Tuesday is going to be a great day! Former Met Captain John Franco is going to join me at Citi Field for the formal unveiling of my Citi Field Commemorative Artwork! Many months ago, the Mets asked me to create a piece to celebrate the opening of the new stadium. You can see the results below. There’s a limited edition 3-D print and a limited edition, numbered (2009) poster. John and I will be signing posters and artwork after the unveiling ceremony. You’ll be able to find us outside the Mets Team Store in the Jackie Robinson Rotunda. The unveiling is scheduled for 5:20 with the signing to start right after that. I’d love to see you there. If you have tix to the game, c’mon by and say hi.
If you’re intersted in purchasing the artwork, you can email my staff at info@fazzinocollectors.com. I also have a lot of new baseball art out for the season. You can see all of it on my fazzino.com website.

I can’t believe how the new diorama sculptures i’m working on are coming out. They’re like my new little babies….i’m just so excited about them. I did the first one as an experiment for Art Expo and have been working on a few new ones since then…They’re like 3D on steroids!!! 3D SQUARED…..3D IN 3D!
I’ve always wanted to create pieces like this but visiting the Red Grooms exhibit at the Hudson River Museum last year inspired me to go ahead and try it. There was one sculpture there that took up a whole room! You could actually walk inside it….
As with all of my new techniques, this one evolved from a small idea into a big one. I started by trying to put together small pieces of canvas…which led to big pieces of canvas…which led to building out independent elements in canvas and boxing them in like in the Venice picture below. I’ve finished one on New York and i have two more in the works. Pictures of all three are below. The one on the bottom is on its side because it’s drying.
I love the fact that i can actually create whole little worlds with these…Many have windows that you can actually peer through … i can create scenes INSIDE the buildings which is really cool. Kind of reminds me of those cards that they had when we were kids that had houses with die cut windows that you could actually open up and see into.
I’m also creating plexiglass boxes with mirrored backs so you can see the 3D from all angles. There’s nothing like new creativity to really inspire me…i’m driven to work on these…to make them better and more interesting…you could say i’m a little obsessed with them. I would welcome feedback from you on what you think…ideas….subjects….i’m on it! I’ll continue to post pictures as they progress.
