Pop Culture…Pop Art.

February 24th, 2009

I'm working with Danielle Turchiano on an original painting she has commissioned. She's a freelance writer and earlier this week, she posted a blog about the role that 90's television had on her life and her upbringing, and how it affected her culturally. Then she showed the sketch of the work i'm creating for her. I actually came across her blog by accident but when i read it, it served as another reminder of why i paint what i paint. There's a significance to popular culture that gets lost sometimes. We forget the influence that that media, fashion, the arts….all of the “pop culture” that surrounds us has on our lives….

Read what she has to say http://danielletbd.blogspot.com/2009/02/growing-up-with-90s-tv-sort-of.html

And here's what i'm working on for her……

Brussels Pop Art Fair and Fazzino

February 23rd, 2009

The “Affordable Art Fairs” are an expanding fine art show “brand” throughout Europe. The show debuted in Brussels in February and my French Distribution Company, Galerie Artima, show my work there for the first time. It was a great success and i'm excited to see my art expanding in Brussels. There is a gallery there that has held several exhibitions of my work, but this art fair has only served to expand the reach of the work. Odile from Galerie Artima sent me some pictures….. This is the Fair's tag line:”…the fab, funky fair where visitors can look at, love and leave with contemporary art.”

More Art Expo Previews!

February 18th, 2009

My staff has sent out art expo tickets to anyone who wants to come over the weekend of February 28 and March 1….so if you're in town and haven't received tickets from us yet, let me know and we'll send some out to you.

It's been a whirlwind in the studio getting ready for the big show! I promised more previews…so here they are. The Diorama is finished….i'm SO HAPPY with how it came out. I've also done an original painting on “The Presidents” featuring our current President Obama…and my daughter is debuting her artwork including some hand-painted furniture pieces. I'll have more pics to share later in the week…The Big Apple Sculpture, more Uniques and Originals and more of Heather's new collection. Enjoy.

The Salvador Dalí Museum

February 10th, 2009

So, despite the chaos of Super Bowl week, i was able to sneak away for a few hours to visit the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg. I highly recommend it. My Art Director Jaime and Gallery Director Carol took a drive over the LONG bridge to St. Pete. I was impressed by the sheer scale of so many of Dalí’s paintings. And i was pleased to see that the evil influences that took over his print market in the 1980's did nothing to dimminish his reputation and legacy. He was so far ahead of his time and in fact, his work is virtually timeless. The museum was full of original works, many of which had never been seen anywhere else before. His work reflected his eccentricities and his deep desire to be unique and to carve out his own niche in the world. I feel an affinity with Dalí, the artist…if not with Dalí, the man. I am driven to carve out my own place in artistic history and to create a body of work that reflects the tone of the times in which I am living…, but as those of you who know me can attest, i am definitely NOT eccentric. Actually, i'm pretty boring. :-)

Dalí is an inspiration to artists today. His vision of the world…the way he literally stretches the boundaries of reality, but at the same time tells the story of his world…gives us a goal to reach for. Communicating an idea…a feeling…a concept through a painting…there was nobody better than Dalí.

Art Expo Preparations

February 6th, 2009

Got back from Tampa on Monday and SLAM…right into the final preparations for Art Expo….we'll be at the Jacob Javits Center from Feb 26-March 2nd. My studio looks like a hurricane hit it…but we're coming up with some really cool things that i'm excited about. Today, i was working with my staff to put together a 3-D Diorama/Sculpture/…..i'm not sure WHAT to call it yet…of the lower east side of manhattan. Never done anything like this before and i can't even tell you where the idea came from. It's changed form at least three times during the creative process…..but i'm loving the way it's coming together.

I'll have more than 15 of my new Uniques at Expo and will be formally debuting the plexiglass sculptures i've been blogging about. And then, of course, there's Heather's new “Crook Couture” collection. I'll give you a few sneak previews here during the coming two weeks. In the meantime, here's the diorama chaos from today. Enjoy!
