Super Bowl XLIV Art Unveiling

November 20th, 2009

Earlier this week, i was in Fort Lauderdale to unveil my tenth Super Bowl commemorative artwork for the NFL. I can’t believe it’s been ten years! I don’t know if it will hit me until i get back to Miami for the actual festivities in February, but the NFL has been an absolute pleasure to work with. I’m honored that they have allowed me to create a ten-year Super Bowl pop art collection…..a collection about which i’m very proud.

Some wonderful people joined me for the unveiling. First of all, i have to extend my thanks to Kim Bokamper - a gentleman, former Dolphin great,  and brilliant businessman. He opened the doors of his incredible sports bar – Bokamper’s – to us and to the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee for this incredible event. Dolphins defensive end Randy Starks and Miss Florida USA 2010 Megan Clementi, also helped me to unveil the piece.

I am also honored to be working with Altadis USA this year…specifically Jim Colucci and Janelle Rosenfeld….to create the first Super Bowl Montecristo humidor. We unveiled that at Bokamper’s too and it was absolutely spectacular.

You can see a video of the entire event in the Media Room of my website.

I’m looking forward to going back in February for a week of events including two gallery shows with Wentworth Galleries, an appearance at the Taste of the NFL, two humidor signings, and a stint in the Dolphins team store on Pro Bowl Sunday and Super Bowl Sunday. It’s going to be an exciting week and we hope to see as many of you down in South Florida as possible!

3D Pop Art Fazzino Helmet on ESPN

November 13th, 2009

I had a fun day yesterday….ESPN host Trey Wingo had asked me to create one of my 3-D hand-painted football pop art helmets for his NFL Live Show. I finally finished it and delivered it up to the studios yesterday. I had the opportunity to meet Trey in person for the first time – what a GREAT guy! He gave us a tour of the ESPN facility. They have 10 buildings up there in Bristol, CT and it’s like a little village all to itself. I saw the old studios and the new studios and studios i couldn’t even tell you the purpose of! The way they move in the baseball “fields’ and the basketball “courts” is just amazing. The technology is very cool.

Anyway, Trey unveiled the helmet on the show last night at midnight and then again this afternoon on the 4pm broadcast and i was flattered by what he said. I hope he and the cast enjoy it for a long time to come!

The Art of Caring for Generations

November 11th, 2009

It’s Veterans Day and I’d like to first take this opportunity to thank all of the men and women who are currently serving our country and who have served our country in the past. I wish i could say more than “thank you” for all that you do and have done….i’ve been honored in the past to work with both the Warriors Foundation and the United Service Organizations (USO) to raise funds to support your efforts, but nothing compares to what you do … day in and day out! THANK YOU!

In honor of Veterans Day, i bring you a photograph that i recently saw that touched me. I was at the United Hebrew Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Rochelle, NY a few weeks ago to see where they had installed some of my artwork. Rita Mabli, the facility’s President gave me a tour and we ended in a beautiful atrium where Rita explained they had recently held an art reception and juried contest titled “Beautiful Aging.” And outside the atrium, in the lobby, hung the photograph taken by Kim Johnson shown below. It had been part of the exhibition and the Center decided to permanently hang it in their lobby.

What a beautiful photograph…there are so many ways you can interpret it, but it’s a wonderful juxtaposition of images…young and old….The Center describes it this way: “This photograph captures the United Hebrew tagline The Art of Caring for Generations so well. It is a testament to our remarkable ability to create a loving and nurturing community both on our campus and outside of our campus walls. Our excellence in caregiving is an art we have refined over the course of generations – one which we look forward to continuing for generations to come.”

I have been wanting to post this photograph and thank Kim for weeks now…since I saw it. But i thought that Veterans Day would be an appropriate time because this day is also about generations….generations of protectors. This photograph conveys protection…the elderly, with their experience and strength, are the backbone of society…they protect the young. They teach the young. They care for the young. All of this feeling is present in this photograph.

So, as you go about your business today…thank your elders….both military and non-military. Thank them for their protection.

Kim, thank you for your thoughtful photograph. You can visit Kim’s website at Aremac Gallery if you’d like to see more of her work. You can also reach the United Hebrew Nursing and Rehabilitation Center through their website or by calling 914-632-2804 x1224.

Enjoy,

–Charles

3D Pop Art at the Annual Doodle for Hunger

November 4th, 2009

Tomorrow night, i’ll be attending the tenth annual Doodle for Hunger to benefit the Capuchin Food Pantries in New York City. This incredible event, spearheaded by my friends Joe Sano and Father Francis is a wonderful evening of food, art, and auction. Every year, Joe collects “doodles” – or drawings –  from an incredible group of celebrities. The drawings are all exhibited during an elegant buffet cocktail party during which they are all auctioned to the highest bidders.

Joe has amassed an incredible collection of these doodles and always has some amazing ones to auction – i’ve seen celebrities like Leroy Nieman, Carol Burnett, Martin Sheen, Ray Romano, John Travolta, Ashley Judd…and so many others…represented at this event. I have NO idea how Joe has built this collection but it is really awesome. I know it’s been through a lot of hard work.

This year, is the 10th anniversary of the Doodle event, so Joe asked me to do a mini print to commemorate the occassion. I was proud to do it. Pictured below are both my Doodle for this year and the mini print.

This year, the event will take place for the last time in the Crystal Room at Tavern on the Green in New York City on Thursday, November 5, 2009. The Ticket price includes dinner buffet, open bar, Doodle preview, silent auction, followed by the live auction. Come join me there! It’s for a wonderful cause. Father Francis and Joe Sano have done so much for so many….i’m proud to be able to contribute to their efforts.

To purchase tickets call (212) 279-6171
