In 2021, the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum commissioned Charles Fazzino to create an artwork that preserved the visual history of September 11, 2001. Five years later, the Museum has returned to him with the same mission for the 25th anniversary.

The result is “9/11: A Time of Reflection.“

A Second Museum Commission

The first artwork, “9/11: A Time for Remembrance, Twenty Years Later,” was unveiled at the Museum on the twentieth anniversary. Fazzino was joined that day by 9/11 Memorial & Museum CEO Alice Greenwald, New York Mets All-Star Pete Alonso, New York Yankee great Bernie Williams, former Mets owner Jeff Wilpon, former NYPD Chief Joseph Esposito, and former NYPD Commissioner Salvatore Cassano.

Speaking at the ceremony, Greenwald described what art can offer in the face of loss.

“Art is a way of coming to understand the world around us, and when we are confronted with the unimaginable, it can be a source of comfort as well as insight,” she said. “This is also a work that invites us to look closely and give ourselves over to both remembrance and affirmation.”

That artwork was placed on display at the Museum, and a portion of its proceeds supported the Museum’s mission.

A Granite Keepsake from the Memorial Plaza

Each piece in the new edition includes an exclusive “Never Forget” granite keepsake, carved from the same granite used to build the 9/11 Memorial plaza.

It is a physical piece of the site itself, and it follows the official commemorative pin that accompanied every piece of the 2021 edition.

At the Museum Store

A line of items adapted from Fazzino’s 2021 artwork is sold at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum store, including keychains, mini prints, mugs, and shirts. All proceeds benefit the Museum’s mission.

A 25th anniversary line has started with a magnet and a mini print, and mugs are in the works.

The 9/11 Artwork

“9/11: A Time of Reflection” features the Twin Towers and One World Trade in a single skyline. Below them sit the two reflecting pools of the Memorial, the Oculus, and the Statue of Liberty, with fire trucks and police cars lining the waterfront, and sailors standing at attention on the deck of the Intrepid.

“Every year, on September 11th, I take a few moments to reflect,” Fazzino says. “My heart aches for the souls who were lost on that fateful day, but I also think about how, despite forces well beyond our control, we came together to aide and protect each other under the darkest circumstances. September 11th was one of the worst moments in human history, but it revealed the best of humanity, and I created this artwork to remind us that we are always capable of rising above if we come together.”
