Fazzino at the 20th Anniversary of Memory Walk

October 26th, 2008

Well, Jaime Cancel (Charles Fazzino's Art Director) and I filled in for Charles at the 20th Anniversary Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk today. Charles is in Europe doing shows in Germany and one in France. He was disappointed that he couldn't be at the Walk, but his schedule is often set a year in advance. Jaime and I were proud to be there representing him, and showing and selling his official poster for the event. We had the posters and the limited edition fine art, and the Alzheimer's Association has produced some really nice note card sets and mousepads from the artwork. More than 3,000 people participated in the Walk and before they even started today, they announced that they had already raised more than $700,000 for Alzheimer's research and care. They were shooting for a new record and were pretty sure they were going to reach it.

The Memory Walk Weather Magic took effect too. Yesterday, we had torrential rains here in NY but today was absolutely gorgeous. Most people finished the walk in short sleeves and some were even in shorts. The speeches were very motivating and the crows was very upbeat. Lou-Ellen Barkan, the President and CEO of the New York Chapter of the Alzheimers Association did a fantastic interview on WABC TV this morning and you can see it here: http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news&id=6470403

And here's Jaime at the walk:

From My Sketch Book

October 23rd, 2008

I don't know any artist who doesn't have a sketch book. I'm no exception. I carry it with me all the time…work in it especially while i'm travelling…on the plane…in the hotel….my sketch book is my outlet for imagination….the only person i have to satisfy with my sketch book is me….it's where i go for free expression, experimentation, and to try out my ideas. I thought i would share a few of my more recent entries with you. Last weekend, my mom was visiting and we ended up drawing together. Can you tell which one is hers?

Adam Szymkowicz

October 19th, 2008

Adam used to work in our studio when he was going to school at Columbia for playwriting. Little did i know that we were in the presence of one of the greatest playwriters of the future. His “Food for Fish” is currently being performed by the Single Carrot Theatre in Baltimore. Read the reviews on Adam's blog and then take a look at the rest of his portfolio. Adam added a great deal of creativity to our studio…even if it was a “different kind” of creativity. If you want to follow a young playwright's career, then make sure you stay up with Adam….he's going to do great things! Rarely have I met someone as dedicated to his art…and determined to be heard!

Hey Adam, congrats on your recent marriage too!

Collectors Mail Bag – USOC Gift Pin for Beijing

October 15th, 2008

My Associate Julie received this note from Helene a few days ago after we helped her obtain the exclusive gift collectors pin that i created for the United States Olympic Committee. That pin is causing quite a stir. I saw one go for more than $600 on ebay recently! Remember, you can get yours by making a $100 donation to the USOC. The details are in the member's lounge.

I had to write and tell you how much I appreciate and thank you for making the effort to find the source for getting the third spectacular pin Charles did for the Beijing Olympics for me and the other Fazzinophiles out there!!! I first found out about this pin when i saw it on e-bay, and almost fell out of my chair! I bid on it, of course, and made my bid high enough (I thought) to discourage anyone else from grabbing it. SO, i thought i was safe with a bid of $22!! How wrong I was. When i woke up the next morning and saw that it went for $512!! I dif fall out of my chair! The next move was to call you guys and find out what this pin was all about and where could we get it? Unfortunately, the answer was that it wasn't available to the general public…I was crestfallen. But not to be dissuaded from my quest, I called you and when you said “I'll call the manufacturer” I just knew, if it was possible, you'd find out. And you not only did, but got me all the information, the name and the address and everything I needed.

The next day, I sent off the letter and the check and today I received my prize! And it's thanks to YOU! I think all my fellow Fazzinofreaks (I just keep coming up with these nicknames for us), owe you a major debt of gratitude and recognition for going that extra mile and for that matter, so does the USOC, because i'm sure that the website will generate a lot of checks to the USOC, not only from us members but probably by word of mouth to lots of other pin collectors and just people who appreciate Charles's work. His NBC pins have always sold out. And after all, that's why the USOC commissioned Charles to do the pin, so they would benefit from teh donations…but how else cna the public find out about the pin?? I don't know why they haven't put the word out. It is at least partly, if not fully, a tax deductible donation.

I have, from the moment I finally met Charles, to this moment of joy, found all the people connected to and who work with him, to be the nicest, most helpful and accessible people I've had the pleasure to know. I didn't mean to get so wordy, but, my cup runneth over! Feel free to edit for length if you'd care to post this on the blog.

Thanks again. Many Hugs,

Helene White

Presidents Council on Physical Fitness

October 13th, 2008

Physical fitness is a big part of my life. My obsession with exercise is almost as well known as my obsession with fine food and wine! I love both and have exercised religiously for years. So, it was extra special for me when Christine Spain from the US Department of Health and Human Services asked me if I would be interested in creating the artwork for the President's Council on Physical Fitness for the 2008-09 school year. Collectively known as the President's Challenge, the series of programs created by the Council to promote activity and healthy living begins in the schools. Children all over the country are introduced to the concept of the active lifestyle, not only in gym class, but throughout their school curriculum. It's such an important part of our lives and so often overlooked. I created a piece of artwork to illustrate this year's theme: “Take the President's Challenge: It's Fun & Good For You!” That piece of artwork is appearing on manuals and posters advertising the Challenge throughout schools all over the country.

There's just too much documented evidence that we are becoming too sedentary. We're not exercising enough and we're not eating healthy foods. I'm certainly not a fitness fanatic, but i encourage every one of you to examine your life and see if there aren't even small changes that you can make over time….changes that will move you in the right direction….towards health and fitness. Too many people struggle with health issues at too early an age because they don't pay attention today to how their activity, or lack of activity, will affect them tomorrow. It's hard to think about tomorrow….especially if you're healthy now. But please, think about how things may catch up with you later, and take action today!

As Christine always says, “Yours, in Health and Fitness”

–Charles

Collectors News and Mailbag

October 6th, 2008

Congratulations to the New Featured Collector on our website, Judy Smith! Judy, it was nice to see you recently at the gallery show in DC and I'm so happy to see you as the new collector! I'm looking forward to seeing you again the next time i'm in town. -Charles

Also, after a recent show in New Jersey, i received the following email from Tracy Monteiro

Thank you Mr. Fazzino for putting up with the sounds of my screaming son in the background of your signing yesterday and my 2 daughters hoverineg over you like hawks circling a mouse in the field. You inspired my oldest as she drew apples and the city with worms jumping off the top, all night at the dinner table. She plans to write about you in her fourth grade journal on Monday. Mommy is now not her favorite artist, I come in second. But thats o.k. Your daughter must think you are a king and appreciate all your work as well (great feeling). I was reading your past blogs and am amazed you mentioned Red Grooms. No one knows who I am talking about (people under 40) when I mention what an incredible artist he is. I have admire him since the first time I saw him on Mr. Rogers as a little girl. His work I agree reminds me of yours in many ways however on a different scale. He too is one of my older favorites. I would love to see his exhibit someday! First time really visiting your website, unless I am assigning for a student report. Nice job.

Tracy, you will always be your daughter's favorite artist!!! My daughter used to think i was a king when she was younger…but like all daddy's girls, she's off to other interests now! :-) Nice to know another Red Grooms fan … it was nice meeting you and i also look forward to seeing you the next time i'm in Jersey!

20th Anniversary of Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk

October 3rd, 2008

I was recently asked by the Alzheimers Association in New York to create an image commemorating the 20th anniversary of their Memory Walk event. I was honored, especially since my own family has been touched by this terrible disease. They told me that more than 5 million Americans are afflicted with this disease. I was surprised to find out that many of them are under the age of 60. Every year, Alzheimer's Associations all over the country run Memory Walks to raise funds for their organization…to fund the search for a cure and support the families of those suffering. This year's walk in New York will take place on October 26th in Manhattan's Riverside Park.

I created an official poster for the event….I decided to make the image in the round because the walk should really be a never-ending walk…at least until we find a cure! The design is also being printed on a scarf by Echo. You can earn the scarf and the posters by raising funds as a walker, but you can also purchase the poster outright to benefit the organization by emailing us at info@fazzinocollectors.com.

A Tribute to Bollywood

October 1st, 2008

One of the artists who works with me, Faiza, is from Pakistan. She's worked with me for years, and for years she's been saying to me… “Charles, you paint so much Broadway and Hollywood…have you ever seen a Bollywood film?” “Bollywood” is a combination of Bombay and Hollywood and is the word used to describe the Hindi-language movie industry. Well, a few months ago, i saw “Bollywood Dreams” on PBS television….it's based on the broadway play…and soon after, Faiza told me about a movie called “Khunda Kay Liye” which means “In the Name of God” in English….i watched it. It was incredible….all about the incredibly tragic way that the Muslim people have been caught up in this whole worldwide “movement” to persecute religious extremists….how good people suffer terrible persecution because they are lumped into the category of “terrorists” just because of their heritage and religious beliefs.

After seeing the film, i decided to work on a painting….a tribute to Bollywood. I just finished it today and i'm very proud of it. Many of my collectors who i've met are of far eastern descent and I thought they might enjoy my interpretation of Bollywood and my homage to their popular culture and heritage.

You can see a larger version of the painting at http://www.fazzino.com/3d_originals_01.htm. I hope you enjoy it….and i urge everyone to listen to the message of “In the Name of God….” i just hope people can judge each other for who they are rather than relying on stereotypes and following the group mentality of hatred and suspicion.
